After relocating to Southern California two years ago, I realized that my skin was behaving in ways that were unfamiliar. On the streets of New York, I wrestled with pollution, humidity and the overcast skies trading it for the dry heat of the canyons, with excessive sunlight and even an occasional mouthful of sand! The skin care regimen I used in NY was not working here, and I had to reevaluate. It was also apparent that my skincare needs had changed from age. What once worked in my twenties was not necessarily what I needed now. Also, changing hormones can negatively impact one’s skin, and a good skin care regimen considers the climate, skin type, skin condition, and the individual needs critical to good skin!
No matter where we live, the goal is to protect, balance and hydrate the skin! When purchasing skincare products, this is important to keep in mind.
Here are a few things to consider:
Protect Your Skin!
No matter where we live, we must protect our skin from the sun! Anyone can get skin cancer, anyone. So, be sure that you are covered up, wear a hat, avoid mid-day sun and use a good sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays. The closer you live to the equator, the stronger the rays! Also, consider downloading a weather app that will alert you to the UV index.
Balance
Is My Skin Thirsty?
The Epidermis, is the outermost layer of the skin, also known as the protective barrier. Ideally, the pH of your skin should be slightly acidic. But, air pollution causes free radical damage. The wrong skincare routine, eating processed foods or drinking alcohol daily can influence your skin’s health and barrier function. Be sure to use the right products for your skin based on skin condition and type. When choosing skincare products, consider both internal and external factors. Wind can leave the skin chapped and irritated, and excessive sun exposure causes premature wrinkles and increases skin cancer risk. Not all weather is created equal neither are skin care lines. Talk to your skin care professional who can help you choose the right cleanser, toner and moisturizers.
Good skin starts from the inside out. The most important thing you can do for your skin is drink good clean water. Be sure that you are drinking enough! Water is obviously not only crucial for your skin’s health but also for your entire organ function! If you live in an arid climate, be sure to hydrate! One of the ways estheticians can tell if you are drinking enough is to look at your skin under magnification. When we gently apply pressure, dehydrated skin will not bounce back as quickly. I have actually witnessed skin “drink.” I can practically see the water absorb into the face like a thirty-house plant!
No matter where you live, good skin care, sun protection, and proper hydration will help to ensure your skin is at its best!
